How it works
What is impact assessment?
Impact assessment (IA) is a transformative process designed to inform and guide decisions and actions by government, businesses, or individuals. It aims to maximize positive outcomes while minimizing negative effects, ultimately fostering sustainable development.
Impact assessment (IA) evaluates the impacts that these...
- Policies
- Projects
- Plans
- Programs
Have on these...
- The environment
- Society and communities
- Jobs and the economy
- Public health
- Cultures and traditions
- Equity & inclusion
- Laws and regulations
- Technology
Here's how.
Let’s say a pipeline project is proposed. Impact assessment processes and tools are used to identify potential impacts the pipeline could have on the physical environment, social communities, etc. and assess the significance of those impacts by engaging the public and other stakeholders.
Then what?
Changes to the project to minimize negative impacts are proposed, along with strategies for monitoring and managing future impacts. Ultimately it is up to the project’s leadership to implement the changes and follow-up strategies, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
